Bedford Gallery, a program of the City of Walnut Creek’s department of Arts, Recreation and Community Services, offers many enriching volunteer opportunities.  Gallery Docents are trained to lead tour groups; Guild Members provide hospitality and information to visitors; and Gallery Interns serve as administrative or curatorial aides.  Volunteering at the Bedford Gallery is fun and provides an opportunity to make friends, learn about art, and help foster love of the arts in our community.  No prior knowledge of art is required.
For more information call 925-295-1418 or e-mail us.

Reward yourself by becoming a Bedford Gallery volunteer! Through our many volunteer opportunities, you can take part in the behind-the-scenes activities of the gallery as you learn about contemporary art and artists of the Bay Area.

As a volunteer you can:

  • Meet some of today's most exciting and provocative artists
  • Work in a dynamic atmosphere with the Bedford Gallery curator, artists, and art historians
  • Visit Bay Area artists' studios, museums, and galleries
  • Participate in hands-on art projects
  • Learn about the inner workings of the Bedford Gallery and other art institutions

Docents

Bedford Gallery docents lead tours of gallery exhibitions for groups of children and adults. Docents receive special training in art history and effective touring techniques. Through exciting interactive tours and participatory discussions, docents provide an invaluable service to the Bay Area community. Docents provide students with the art education that many schools can no longer offer. Children's tours include a hands-on workshop. Tours are by appointment and most are scheduled for weekday mornings.

Gallery Guild Members

Bedford Gallery Guild members staff the gallery's front desk, greet visitors, provide visitors with information, and monitor activities in the gallery. Guild members also host Bedford Gallery's opening receptions and participate in fundraising activities. Guild members work weekday afternoons and some evenings during receptions.

Interns

Gallery interns receive hands-on experience in such areas as exhibition research and preparation, public relations, fund-raising, and gallery administration. Interns use their skills with computers, graphic design, manual and power tools, writing, and phone reception to help organize exhibitions, publicize events, and meet administrative needs. Interns are asked to make a full semester and/or a three- to six-month commitment to the institution. College student interns sometimes receive school credit.
