Shelter and Habitat in Contemporary Art

September 5 – November 17, 2013

The Bedford Gallery is pleased to announce the first show of our 2013-14 exhibition season, Home: Shelter and Habitat in Contemporary Art.

The show features a national group of artists working in diverse mediums including painting, sculpture, video, and photography. Bedford Gallery Curator Carrie Lederer states: “These works investigate everything from interiors and abstract concepts of what makes a home, to scenes of devastation and abandonment. Artists completely deconstruct the four walls we build around ourselves, producing art that is playful, surreal, familial, and at times, disturbing.”

Sculptors Sasha Petrenko and Gina Tuzzi imagine a nomadic lifestyle, where homes can be brought with us wherever we go. Ari Salomon’s photographs provide touching and intimate views of the interior of his great aunt’s apartment where she lived for 30 years. In contrast, Todd Hido’s photographs are taken from an outsider’s perspective. His haunting exterior shots leave us to imagine who inhabits these homes and what might be taking place inside. Hailing from New Orleans, Hannah Chalew’s mixed media works document the many abandoned structures left to decay after Hurricane Katrina – the empty buildings slowly being reclaimed by nature. Some artists choose to stretch the idea of home, imagining fantastic structures such as those found in Dean Monogenis’ surreal and beautifully rendered paintings.

No matter what form they take, our homes provide both physical shelter and emotional protection. They can comfort us, help define us, and in some cases become monuments to our lives after we’ve left.
