Objects Of Virtue

Dec 1, 2009 - Jan 31, 2010

Objects of Virtue, December 1, 2009 – January 31, 2010, explores the innovative ways in which artists use the sculptural and painterly qualities of clay to create varied and distinctive new vessels. As an amalgamation of surface, color, texture, and mass, fired clay is potentially one of the richest art mediums. Utilitarian pottery supports and represents our intimate rituals of nourishment and celebration. An Opening Reception will be held Wednesday, December 2 from 6:00-8:00 pm.

Open to all potters in the United States, this exhibition will show why artists working in clay are celebrated for the innovative ways they take advantage of the sculptural and painterly opportunities ceramics offer. Juror Julia Galloway, Chair of the School of Art at the University of Montana states, “An exhibition and gallery location is a brief but very important place for pottery. It is through the act of ‘show’ that the public first comes to see and understand the work. Specific displays of pottery can bridge the viewer with the content in work.”

Julia Galloway is a master potter and professor. She received her MFA at the University of Colorado in Boulder, and BFA at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. She has been an Artist in Residence at the Archie Bray Foundation and at the Anderson Ranch Arts Center. Julia has exhibited across the US and Canada, including solo exhibitions at Lillstreet Art Center in Chicago, the Clay Arts Center in New York, and Trax Gallery in California. She is in the collections of the College of William and Mary, the Archie Bray Foundation, and the Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian.
