About this Functional Artwork

A landmark valley oak growing nearby inspired Norie Sato ‘s concept for this unusual and spectacular fence. She incorporates the forms of the tree in two ways. Using laser- or waterjet-cut perforations, the Corten segments reflect a “photographic” reading of the leaves, while the aluminum panels reflect the branches. Corten steel weathers to a velvety brown matte finish that contrasts with the light-colored aluminum.

Together they allow interesting views into and out of the Viamonte courtyard that shift with varied lighting conditions. The 80-by-7-foot fence, located at the back side of the building on the park, incorporates a gate.

The title’s word “fold’ has a dual meaning: literally folded like origami, as well as being part of a metaphorical fold of the community it surrounds. The artist’s intent is to create a unique and engaging artwork that emphasizes connectivity, transparency, openness, and accessibility with a beautifully crafted screen.
